Asking the Right Questions...
Asking tough questions allows you to realize the true competency of a contractor. To evaluate the fairness and value of a contractor's bid, you also need to compare applications. Be clear on a contractor’s terminology and the details of what work will be performed. Too many times, a decision is based on the lowest bid without determining if the scope of work or terminology reflects job expectations.
The following tips and guidelines should also be considered when selecting contractors to ensure accurate cost comparisons.
- Do bids clearly identify the same type of product/service to be used?
- What is the estimated time frame to complete the work? Will it take one firm longer and cause greater disturbance to your company?
- What type of equipment will be used on the job?
- Are the application methods the same in all the bids?
- Can they provide “Product Specification” sheets?
- Do they carry any kind of warranty or guarantee?
- Did each bid follow your requirements to produce the estimate?
- What are their plans for traffic control?
- Do they have all the proper insurance requirements?
- Are their crews trained and knowledgeable?
- Do they have a reliable credit rating?
- Have they clearly defined the work procedure and scope of the project?
To ensure that you get what you pay for, it is recommended that all work is carefully inspected and monitored as it is being performed.
